Animorphs is a 64-book series by K.A. Appelgate. If you haven't read it...GO FIND IT NOW
Ahem, if you HAVE read the series, kudos, and you can skip the next two paragraphs. If you haven't, read on.
Anyone ever tell you aliens don't exist? They're wrong. They're out there. Yeerks, Andalites, Hork-Bajir and many more. Some of them are friendly, some of them aren't. Yeerks are the ones you really have to worry about; ugly little parasitic slugs that can slip inside your ear and latch onto your brain. From there, they completely control all of your movements, you become a prisoner in your own mind, helpless to do anything.
Okay, enough misquoting the series, here's what went down. Yeerks came to Earth looking for perfect hosts; us. They integrated their way subtly into the population. Andalites briefly tried to fight them, and the last of those that came, a warrior named Elfangor, happened to crash his spaceship in the path of a bunch of kids walking home. Jake, Cassie, Rachel, Marco, and Tobias became Animorphs that night. Thanks to the Escafil device (aka, the morphing cube) they became able to become any animal they touch. They alone stood against the Yeerk invasion. Eventually, they emerged, bloody, beaten, and with Rachel dead, but victorious. Along the way, they picked up a stranded Andalite; Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthil, whom they affectionately call Ax. Ax leaves when peace is restored, but Jake and Marco get word that he has disappeared. So, gathering Tobias, but leaving Cassie behind, they go to save him. The series ends with a cliffhanger as their ship engages in battle with the one belonging to the being that had assimilated Ax into itself.
That's the elevator version. Now, here's what you need to know. Crayak, as those of you that have read the series know, doesn't like losing. If you don't know who Crayak is, read the Ellimist Chronicles, Book #26 The Attack, or just Wiki him. He's decided to mess with the timeline a little. You wake up one day, and your world looks like a nuclear holocaust. It gets worse; the Yeerks are back. Everyone you knew is either dead or a Controller. There are only small resistance factions. Cassie, who survived, leads one. You will join one led by the admins or anyone else who has been given a leadership position.
Morphs: Gyrfalcon, Great Horned Owl, Cobra, Black Panther, Killer Whale, Hornet, Wolverine, Hyrax

Before I take any questions, I'd like to answer one of my own that I thought up and people may share
If the Yeerks control so much of the planet already - as in, every human being is either an Animorph, a refugee, a Controller, or dead - how can we even mount an effective resistance? Don't they just have the resources to hunt us down and wipe us out? They don't exactly have to be subtle.
The answer is no, they don't. The Yeerk control may be nearly complete, but they did so much damage to the planet that they are attempting to rebuild it at least partially before they can complete the takeover. We are Class 5 hosts, as they say; perfection. And there are 6 billion of us. They don't want to screw this up.
Afterthought: Book 41, when Jake wakes up in an alternate reality, is a good example of what's been going on.
Is there a Yeerk Peace Movement like in the original series? I know they were more like underground hiding and terrorists in book 41, but could they exist, possibly posing as regular controllers?
What year is it and how long has it been since the yeerks took over?
It is the year 2009 or whatever year you join this site. The date syncs with the real world date. As for the yeerks, well they have been here a long time. Since around the year 1990 or 1991. The first yeerk to ever come to earth landed in the middle of the Gulf War.
But the invasion was kept secret, an infiltration more than an invasion. Humans were quietly taken either as voluntary hosts recruited through the Sharing or as involuntary hosts, taken and made into Controllers before anyone knew the difference. When the yeerks felt like they had enough hosts in enough powerful positions they went public with the invasion and decimated the human resistance in the year 2006.
For the past three years (adjust accordingly for current date) the animorphs have been trying to take Earth back.
